Sociodemographic Inequality Gaps in the Amazon Region: Supporting the Development and Implementation of the Amazon Cooperation Strategic Agenda
The Amazon is not only a highly important and structurally significant ecosystem due to its environmental and climatic contributions, but it is also home to over 50 million people. To better understand the living conditions and various needs and vulnerabilities of the Amazonian population, this document analyzes the sociodemographic inequality gaps of the population living in the territories that are part of the Amazon Region. Through the analysis of sociodemographic indicators obtained from population censuses and household surveys of the member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), it is shown that poverty and existing inequalities in the Amazonian territories of these countries are greater than those in the rest of each country’s territory. The heterogeneity of the Amazonian population is also highlighted, composed of 18 million Afro-descendants and 6 million indigenous people, among other population groups, and characterized by a high degree of urbanization. Subtopics: demography, international cooperation.
