The Forum of Mayors, a subsidiary organ of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), has emerged as an innovative multilateral space that gives a leading role to the local governments involved. There have been three editions of the event so far, with the upcoming fourth edition set to take place from September 30th to October 1st at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, under the theme “Future Cities Summit.”

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will play a crucial role by supporting the participation of mayors from the Latin American and Caribbean region. Some of the authorities that will be present at the event include María Clara Muzzio, Deputy Mayor of Buenos Aires; Diego Miranda Méndez, Mayor of San José, Costa Rica; and Paola Pabón, Mayor of Pichincha, Ecuador. This support aims to ensure significant representation from the LAC region, fostering the development of a diverse community of urban experts. The event offers a unique platform for mayors to debate the global challenges they face and discuss how these issues are affecting them.

Additionally, the forum presents an exceptional opportunity for mayors to issue declarations and convey their recommendations to UN member states. These recommendations will address how to tackle current challenges in sustainable urban development, housing, land management, resilience, and climate change adaptation, among other crucial issues.

The forum will be broadcast on the UN Television Channel (UNTV).
